The Split™ image processing software programs are the products of over ten years of research and development at the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering, University of Arizona. In 1997, members of the original university research team incorporated Split Engineering, LLC to commercialize, distribute and continuously improve the software.

The original software for measuring mine rock fragmentation size evolved into Split-Online and Split-Desktop. The Split-Online base input/output modules were further expanded to offer more processing and analysis capabilities including pellet size measurement, texture classification and aggregate rock size measurement.
