The BMM System, developed and marketing by Blast Movement
Technologies in Australia, is the first time there has been
a practical method which provides accurate 3-dimesional blast
movement data. Despite the innovative technology, it is remarkably
simple to use - designed for routine use by site personnel.
This technology enables a genuine step-change in grade control
and is generating significant interest from some of the world's
largest mining companies. The BMM system enables production
controls that were not possible previously and has shed new
light on our understanding of blast dynamics which in turn
leads to better blast designs.

A series of directional transmitters (BMMs) are activated,
programmed and installed in dedicated drill holes prior to
blasting. A special detector is used to locate the BMMs after
the blast and calculate their depth. Data is downloaded to
accompanying software that calculates the movement vector
of each BMM. This data is then summarized and archived for
later reference. With this new information, ore boundaries
can be quickly redefined to reflect the measured movement,
thus enabling more precise selection of ore and waste after
the blast.
